Viola Davis rejects Target's apology after children's Halloween costume sparks blackface backlash
Viola Davis has publicly rejected an apology from a major retailer after the company released a children's Halloween costume that critics condemned as racist.

😔 Target pulled a children’s Halloween costume after critics said it evoked blackface and racist minstrel imagery.
The $25 “Kids’ Glows Under Blacklight Circus Clown” costume featured a Black child in a mask with an exaggerated wide smile. Target later apologized, calling the costume “especially hurtful for our Black guests, team members and partners.”
But Viola Davis isn’t accepting it.
“I do not believe that you understand the impact… the pain… the dehumanization,” she wrote. “These images laid the foundation and the ideology for every atrocity that has been committed against my people. We MATTER!! You have shown us that you are not on OUR side.”
Some apologies come too late to undo what was already approved, marketed, and put on shelves. 🖤
