📚🖤 Before Black women were being centered in comics, Jackie Ormes was already drawing us with style, intelligence and personality.

Jackie Ormes is widely recognized as the first Black woman syndicated cartoonist in the United States, creating characters that challenged the stereotypes Black women were often reduced to in media.

Through her comics, she gave Black women something different to see on the page — women who were fashionable, outspoken, smart, political and fully themselves.

Her work wasn’t just entertaining. It helped push representation forward in an industry where Black women were almost invisible.

Long before “representation matters” became a phrase, Jackie Ormes was already doing the work. 🖤
